Privacy Policy for SomaTap
SomaTap is a homework support app designed to help Ugandan parents guide their primary-school children from P1 to P7. Parents can create or select a child profile, take a photo of a homework question or type a question, and receive an explanation matched to the child's class level.
This Privacy Policy explains how SomaTap collects, uses, stores, shares, and protects user information.
1. Who SomaTap is for
SomaTap is intended for use by parents and guardians who want to support their children’s learning at home.
The app is not designed for children to use alone without parental guidance. Parents and guardians are responsible for supervising how children use the app and how answers are applied during homework.
2. Information we collect
Depending on how you use SomaTap, we may collect the following information:
a) Account information
If the app requires registration or login, we may collect:
- Name
- Phone number
- Email address
- Password or login credentials
- Authentication details
b) Child profile information
To provide class-level explanations, SomaTap may allow parents to create child profiles. These may include:
- Child’s name or nickname
- Class or grade level, such as P1, P2, P3, P4, P5, P6, or P7
- Learning preferences or subject level, where applicable
We recommend that parents use a nickname instead of a child’s full legal name.
c) Homework questions
When you use SomaTap, we may collect:
- Photos of homework questions taken using the camera
- Typed homework questions
- Subject or class-level information attached to the question
- Generated explanations or answers
Photos may contain handwritten text, printed homework, schoolwork, exercise book pages, or other visible information included in the image.
d) App usage information
We may collect basic technical and usage data, such as:
- App activity
- Features used
- Error logs
- Device type
- Operating system version
- App version
- General performance information
This helps us improve the app, fix bugs, and provide a better user experience.
e) Payment information
If SomaTap includes paid features, subscriptions, or in-app purchases, payment processing may be handled by Google Play or another payment provider. We do not store full card details or mobile money PINs.
3. How we use your information
We use collected information to:
- Provide homework explanations based on the child’s selected class level
- Process photographed or typed homework questions
- Generate step-by-step working, especially for Mathematics
- Save child profiles and learning settings
- Improve accuracy and user experience
- Maintain app security
- Provide customer support
- Fix technical issues
- Manage subscriptions or paid access, where applicable
- Comply with legal and regulatory requirements
SomaTap is designed to support learning and parent-child guidance. It is not intended to encourage cheating, copying, or misuse of schoolwork.
4. Camera permission
SomaTap may request access to your device camera so that you can take photos of homework questions.
Camera access is used only when you choose to photograph a question. SomaTap does not use your camera in the background.
You can disable camera access at any time through your device settings, but this may prevent photo-based question submission from working.
5. How homework photos and questions are processed
When you submit a photo or typed question, it may be uploaded to our servers or trusted service providers so that the question can be read, processed, and answered.
This may include:
- Reading text from an image
- Understanding the question
- Matching the answer to the selected class level
- Generating an explanation for the parent
We advise users not to upload images containing unnecessary personal information, such as full names, addresses, phone numbers, school IDs, or private documents.
6. Sharing of information
We do not sell your personal information.
We may share limited information with trusted service providers who help us operate SomaTap, such as:
- Cloud hosting providers
- Authentication providers
- AI or question-processing providers
- Analytics and crash-reporting providers
- Payment processors
- Customer support tools
These providers are only allowed to use the information to provide services to SomaTap and must handle the data securely.
We may also disclose information if required by law, regulation, court order, or government authority.
7. Children’s privacy
SomaTap is built to help parents support children’s learning, but the app is intended to be used by parents or guardians.
Parents should not allow children to submit personal information without supervision. Where child profile information is used, parents should provide only the minimum information needed, such as class level and a nickname.
If we become aware that a child has provided personal information without parental consent, we will take reasonable steps to delete that information.
8. Data storage and security
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect user information from unauthorized access, loss, misuse, alteration, or disclosure.
However, no digital service can guarantee 100% security. Users should also protect their own devices, accounts, passwords, and phone access.
9. Data retention
We keep user information only for as long as necessary to provide SomaTap services, improve the app, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our terms.
Homework photos, typed questions, and generated answers may be retained for a limited period to support app functionality, improve service quality, prevent abuse, and provide customer support.

10. User rights and choices
Users may request to:
- Access their personal information
- Correct inaccurate information
- Delete their account
- Delete child profile information
- Delete submitted homework data, where applicable
- Withdraw consent where processing is based on consent

11. Third-party services
SomaTap may use third-party services to support app functionality, such as hosting, analytics, crash reporting, AI processing, authentication, or payments.

12. International data transfer
Some of our service providers may process or store data outside Uganda. Where this happens, we take reasonable steps to ensure that personal information is handled securely and in accordance with this Privacy Policy.
13. Changes to this Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make important changes, we may notify users through the app, website, or other appropriate means.
The updated version will show a new effective date.
